Recently it has become clear that the sHSPs are polydisperse, meaning that more than one oligomeric state is found (Baldwin, 2011). HSP21 is a target of HsfA2 (ref. 52), a heat-inducible transcription factor that plays a crucial role for setting the thermomemory in Arabidopsis 25. It is also upregulated by HsfA1a/b 61 , indicating that heat-induced expression of HSP21 is under the control of multiple heat-associated transcription factors.

Here we show that Arabidopsis HSP21, a plastidial small heat shock protein that rapidly accumulates after heat stress and remains abundant during the thermomemory phase, is a crucial component of thermomemory. Sustained memory requires that HSP21 levels remain high.

The chloroplast-localized sHsp, named Hsp21 with reference to its monomeric size, has an N-terminal region that is some 40 amino acids longer compared to the cytosolic sHsps, and increases plant stress tolerance as shown by Arabidopsis thaliana plants which overexpress Hsp21.
